How to Get Rid of Feather Mites on Chickens

Mites hide in the feather bases and in coop cracks, not just on the bird — a look at which mite you're dealing with, and the two-front treatment that clears them for good.

How to Get Rid of Feather Mites on Chickens

The reason a feather-mite problem hides in a backyard flock is that “feather mites on chickens” is really two problems, and the treatment plan has two fronts. On the bird, the common culprit is northern fowl mite (Ornithonyssus sylviarum). These are grey-to-white specks about a millimetre long that live their whole life cycle on the hen, clustering around the vent and under the tail where you can find them by parting feathers.[1] In the coop, the culprit is poultry red mite (Dermanyssus gallinae). These are nocturnal blood-feeders that hide in cracks in the roost bar during the day, come out to bite at night, and can leave an empty coop infested for up to nine months.[1][2] Getting rid of them means treating the birds AND cleaning the coop at the same time, and neither front alone finishes the job. What Feather Mites Look Like on a Chicken

The mite-ID move for a backyard flock is knowing which of the two common poultry mites you’re dealing with, because they behave differently and hide in different places. Northern fowl mite (Ornithonyssus sylviarum) lives its whole life cycle on the bird. Merck’s mite-of-poultry chapter names it as “typically found by parting feathers in the vent area”,[1] and life cycle plays out in five to twelve days on the hen herself.[1] Poultry red mite (Dermanyssus gallinae) is the opposite: it doesn’t stay on the bird during the day. It hides in the woodwork and comes out at night to feed.

Northern fowl mite — the one you find on the hen

Pick a hen up in daylight, tilt her forward, and part the feathers around the vent, under the tail, and along the belly. On an infested bird you’ll see clusters of dark specks against the skin, grey to white before a blood meal and deep red when engorged, with streaks of blackish debris along the base of the feather shafts. That debris IS the tell most owners see first, because the mites themselves sit right at the edge of what your eye can resolve unaided; the debris is coarser and easier to spot. Merck describes the skin-level picture on a heavily-infested bird as “thick, crusty skin, severe scabbing, and soiled feathers”.[1] Transmission from bird to bird is by “mite dispersion or by contact with infested birds, animals, or inanimate objects”,[1] which in practice means: one hen shows signs, treat the flock.

Poultry red mite — the one you find in the coop

Poultry red mite is a night-shift parasite. Alabama Cooperative Extension’s write-up is plain about the daytime biology: “They conceal themselves within the chicken coop surroundings”, “they congregate in cracks and crevices”, and “this particular mite stays on the chickens only at night”,[2] emerging to feed “5 to 11 hours after darkness”.[2] Merck adds that they “hide during the day under bird droppings, on roosts, in nest boxes, and in cracks and crevices”.[1] The tell most owners notice first is not visual at all. Hens are suddenly reluctant to enter the coop at night; birds shift and fuss on the roost; egg production dips without another explanation. That is Dermanyssus biology: the mites come out of the woodwork after dark, and the hens have learned that roosting is now a nightly bloodletting. Confirming poultry red mite is present takes a torch-and-timing check, walked through in its own H2 below.

Poultry red mite’s fast life cycle is what makes the coop side of the treatment plan non-negotiable. Alabama Extension records the timeline plainly: “in optimal conditions, the time between an egg being laid, molting several times, and becoming an egg-producing adult can be as short as a week”,[2] and Merck notes the equivalent: “life cycle can be completed in only 1 week”.[1] Both sources agree on the long-tail warning: “a poultry house can remain infested for up to 9 months after affected birds are removed”,[1] which Alabama Extension corroborates with “poultry red mites are good survivors and can live in the environment for up to 9 months without feeding”.[2] This is why sprayed birds moved back into an untreated coop are re-infested inside a week.

True feather and quill mites — the less common third case

Strictly speaking, “feather mite” is a family name for the mites that live on the vanes and barbules of the feather itself (family Proctophyllodidae and its relatives), and “quill mite” for the ones that live inside the calamus, the hollow shaft at the base of the feather. In wild birds these are commonly observed at low populations and cause little harm; in commercial poultry, and in backyard flocks that have picked up a heavy population from a wild-bird visitor at the feeder, they can cause visible feather damage and irritation. What you see is not the mite (they are pinpoint-sized on the vane, invisible inside the quill) but the damage: ragged, chewed-looking vane edges, a fine dust on dark-coloured feathers, or deformed and fractured shaft bases where a quill mite has been at work. In practical terms, most backyard cases keepers describe as “feather mites” are one of the two common poultry mites above (northern fowl mite or poultry red mite), and the treatment plan below is the one that clears them. True feather-mite infestations respond to the same spinosad and pyrethroid-family acaricides used for the common poultry mites.

Is it mites, moulting, or feather-pulling? The differential picture

Feather loss on a hen has three common backyard-flock causes, and the wrong-diagnosis treatment (spraying a moulting bird with permethrin, dosing a bored coop with acaricide instead of adding perch space) delays the care she needs. The differential is straightforward once you know what to check.

The After-Dark Torch Check — How to Confirm Poultry Red Mite Is in the Coop

A daytime feather check on the birds doesn’t tell you what’s in the woodwork. Poultry red mite hides in cracks all day; a coop that looks clean at noon can be alive after midnight. The check is straightforward and unpleasant, and doing it once is what tells you whether the coop pass in the treatment plan is optional or non-negotiable.

A clean torch check does NOT mean poultry red mite is absent. A light population can hide in cracks a single walk-through misses. But a check that comes up positive settles the question, and the two-front treatment plan below runs from there.

Which Mite Is It — the Two-Front Rule

The reason “which mite is it” matters is not species-collecting; it’s where the treatment goes. Northern fowl mite lives on the bird, which means the spray hits the bird and the coop matters less. Poultry red mite lives in the coop, which means the spray hits the coop and the bird’s spray is the smaller of the two jobs. The two-front rule is: assume both fronts unless the differential is clean, because a mixed infestation is common in backyard flocks (a hen brings northern fowl mite home; a wild songbird drops poultry red mite in the run) and treating one front and not the other is how a keeper spends a fortnight on Elector spray and still has itchy hens in three weeks.

Read the table two ways. Straight across each row, it’s the biological difference between the two mites: where they live, when they feed, how you find them. Down each column, it’s the treatment shape for the mite in that column. Northern fowl mite’s column reads “on the bird, day and night, feather check, spray the birds”. Poultry red mite’s column reads “in the woodwork, only at night, torch check, strip the coop”. A keeper doing both a daytime feather check and an after-dark torch check gets both readings on the same evening; a keeper doing only one gets half the picture and, often, half the eradication.

The daytime feather check tells you whether northern fowl mite is present on the birds. The after-dark coop check tells you whether poultry red mite is present in the woodwork. Do both checks the same day; whatever you find, treat both fronts anyway on a first pass. The coop pass is not “belt and braces”. It is the direct reading of Merck’s warning that “a poultry house can remain infested for up to 9 months after affected birds are removed”.[1] A clean bird put back into an untreated coop is a re-infested bird by the next weekly check.

Two other flock-level signs push the diagnosis toward mites rather than a coincidental moult. Egg production drops across the flock, the coop-side biology of blood loss and stress. And Merck’s chapter names the systemic cost plainly: heavy mite loads “decrease reproductive potential in males, egg production in females, weight gain in young birds, and feed conversion efficiency”, and in extreme cases “cause anaemia and death”.[1] Pale comb and wattle on a laying hen who was cherry-red last month is the anaemia sign your fingers will spot in a routine handling check.

How to Treat Feather Mites — Label-Directed Sprays on the Birds

Treatment for both common poultry mites starts with a label-directed acaricide spray on the birds while parting the feathers to reach skin. Two products dominate current backyard-flock guidance: Elector PSP (spinosad, an insecticide derived from a soil bacterium), and permethrin (a synthetic pyrethroid). Merck’s mite chapter names both classes among the effective agents; a newer option, oral fluralaner administered in the drinking water, was approved in 2025 for laying-hen use and is finding its way into vet protocols for heavy or persistent infestations. The right product for your flock depends on flock size, whether the birds are laying, what stage of infestation you’re at, and what your vet or extension office is currently recommending locally. Label-directed use is not a preference; it is the safety envelope both products live inside.

Elector PSP (spinosad) — the current standard-of-care spray

Elector PSP is the spinosad-based product that has become the standard-of-care spray for backyard mite eradication when combined with a coop pass. The current bottle label specifies different dilutions for different target mites: roughly 3 fluid ounces per 10 gallons of water for northern fowl mites, roughly 2 fluid ounces per 5 gallons for poultry red mites. Read those numbers as label-directed, not as canonical. Elanco updates dilutions and reapplication windows periodically, and the 9 mL per gallon figure you’ll see repeated on backyard-chicken sites is worth checking against the label in your hand rather than repeating from the forum thread. Fluid ounces per gallon — the bottle label, not the backyard forum — is the rule for this product.

Permethrin — spray or dust, not a whole-bird dip

Permethrin is one of the pyrethroid-family acaricides registered for poultry use and remains one of the most commonly-recommended treatments for the two common poultry mites. It comes in a liquid concentrate diluted per the bottle label, or in a ready-to-use powder for dusting. Follow the label protocol on the product you buy; extension-published label summaries give the water-mix rate and the reapplication window for the concentrate, and the powder label gives the dusting frequency. The one hard rule that overrides any label variation: do NOT fully immerse a chicken in a permethrin bath. Extension guidance and manufacturer labels for poultry permethrin products specify spray or dust application on parted feathers. That is the delivery method that reaches skin without a systemic dose. A whole-bird dip pushes the acaricide across the entire skin surface at once, and the risk of overdose and cold-stress from wet-plumage handling is not offset by any efficacy the label supports.

Egg withdrawal after a spinosad or permethrin spray on laying hens depends on the exact product and its label. Elector PSP’s poultry label carries a specific withdrawal window; permethrin products vary. Check the withdrawal statement on the bottle you buy and eat the eggs that come off the flock within that window at your own risk, or discard them, per the label. Ivermectin, which owners sometimes reach for as a broader-spectrum knockout, is off-label in chickens and its egg-withdrawal picture is entirely unresolved by the FDA. Folk remedies and product misuses to skip

Cleaning the Coop — Where the Eradication Finishes

Because poultry red mite’s life happens in the woodwork and only visits the bird to feed, the coop pass is the front where an infestation is finished or where it isn’t. Alabama Extension’s IPM guidance frames it plainly: “regular cleaning disturbs the cracks and crevices where red mites hide”, and “painting the inside of the coop is another way to cover up many of the cracks and crevices where mites like to hide”.[2] The full pass is more than a sweep; it’s a strip, a spray, a rebed, and a repeat.

Recheck the flock’s vents and the coop woodwork weekly for the first month after the last spray. A vent-area feather check that comes up clean and an after-dark torch check that shows no reddish specks in the roost-bar seams together mean the two-front pass finished. Any sign returning is the sign to start the two-front sequence over on the affected birds and their coop, not to wait and see.

When to call a vet

Most backyard mite infestations resolve on the label-directed two-front pass at home without a vet ever seeing the flock, and that is the right call when the birds are otherwise well and the coop is a shape you can strip and spray. Trouble, when it comes, comes from either a case that has advanced to anaemia in one or more birds, a flock that’s not clearing after two full two-front passes, or a keeper considering ivermectin on birds nobody has weighed. All three are vet calls.

Get her (or the flock) to an avian vet the same day if any of this is happening:

  • Comb and wattles have gone pale or bluish on a hen who was cherry-red last month. That is the anaemia picture from heavy blood-feeding, which Merck names among the extreme outcomes.[1]
  • You’ve run two full two-front passes 7 days apart and the birds are still visibly infested. Time to reassess whether it’s the right acaricide for the mite you have, whether resistance is at play, or whether a concurrent condition (lice, an underlying illness) is complicating the picture.
  • You’re considering ivermectin on your own from a horse-paste tube or a sheep-drench bottle. Don’t. The units are milligrams-per-kilogram, the overdose picture in a small bird is real, and the vet is the person to weigh her and write the dose.
  • Egg production has fallen across the flock and stayed down for more than a week. Mites can drive that, but so can several other conditions worth ruling out before you assume acaricide-resistance.
  • A bird is off her feed, off her feet, or breathing hard. Those are not mite signs; they mean something bigger is happening and the mite question waits.

Feather mites caught at the “part the vent feathers and you can see them” stage are a two-front pass on ordinary label-directed products, done over a fortnight, and finished. Caught late, with a hen already anaemic and the coop’s woodwork alive at night, the same infestation is a welfare emergency that runs alongside the eradication. The distance between the two is a weekly vent check on the flock and an after-dark torch-and-listen visit to the coop, and a willingness to reach for the sprayer the day the pattern shows.
